Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of self-medication with antibiotics for oral health issues in Iran during 2021–2022 and to identify associated demographic factors.

A cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study was conducted using an online questionnaire administered to individuals aged 15–70 years. The aim of the study was to assess self-medication practices and relevant demographic information.

The results showed that 43.1% of participants self-medicated with antibiotics for dental issues. Males and individuals lacking supplemental dental or medical insurance had higher odds of self-medication. Additionally, the odds were significantly increased among residents of rural areas and those who reported a travel time of more than 45 minutes to the nearest dental center. Participants who kept leftover antibiotics from previous prescriptions had an odds ratio of 3.19 for self-medication.

The findings highlight a concerning prevalence of self-medication with antibiotics for oral problems in the Iranian population, indicating an urgent need for strategies to curb this practice.
