ملخص
The aim of this study was to determine the levels of traffic-related particulate matters (PMs) and their elemental compositions in Doha, Qatar. The PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations were measured using DPS monitors. The elemental composition of PM samples was determined by an ICP-MS. Electron beam microscope was also used to confirm the size of particles collected on filters from select sites. During the study period, it was determined that there is a direct relationship between the concentrations of elements detected in PM samples and the number of cars passed through sample collection sites. The environmental factors, such as temperature, humidity, and wind speed did not influence the concentrations of PMs. The levels of Pb, Ni, and Cr which are known carcinogenic metals were reported to be between 200 and 900 ppb, indicating a possible public health hazard. The presence of high concentrations of Al, Mg, Na, Fe, and Zn referred to the origin of PMs to be mainly crustal material, sea salt, and fossil fuel combustion. The results obtained in this study might be helpful in establishing new air quality standards to protect the public health and the environment in Qatar.
