This presentation will provide an overview of considerations facing research ethics boards and human research protection programs in the handling of environmental health research. Based on the ethical principles and regulatory requirements underlying the Qatari and American human research protections systems, the presentation will briefly examine issues such as:

1. - determining what constitutes "human subjects research".
2. - providing the appropriate level of review.
3. - evaluating risks and benefits.
4. - showing due respect to subjects.
